The Friends of the Environment Center of the Ministry of Sports and Youth has launched a programme through the month of July with a range of activities and trips that aim to raise young people’s awareness on environmental issues and Qatar’s rich biodiversity.
The programme, which was organized in a partnership with LuLu Hypermarket, Al-Hanzab Reserve, Alazem camp and Monoprix, intends to raise the youth’s awareness of the importance of conserving the local environment through organizing several training workshops on various methods of agriculture, recycling, handcrafts, as well as knowledge trips.
The Friends of the Environment Center is one of the leading institutions in Qatar in climate change communication and raising awareness of the importance of the issue in daily life among Qatari youth.
The programme was launched with a workshop, attended by a group of girls and women, on how to use extra fabric to manufacture things that can be utilized in homes, such as table covers and various home decorations.
The centre is due to also organize a workshop next Tuesday for the same group to raise their awareness on the importance of agriculture and methods of adorning home gardens with beneficial plants.
Meanwhile, the programme will feature a land trip on July 14 to explore wildlife at the Al-Hanzab Reserve, to introduce the participants to Qatar’s diverse flora and fauna, and their role in preserving food chains and species that depend on these plants.
The center will also organize a cruise tour on July 19 to develop the youth’s awareness on the importance of preserving marine species and introduce them to Qatar’s biodiversity, along with its efforts to nurture marine life and methods of preserving its species.
In this same context, earlier this year in April, the center held a seminar, the second seminar of the Second Environmental Forum 2023, on the marine environmental challenges faced by the State of Qatar and the GCC countries, mainly marine pollution and its impacts on the marine food chain.
This was following the first seminar of Second Environmental Forum 2023 entitled “Climate Change: Challenges and Aspirations” that was held under the patronage of Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
The State of Qatar’s National Climate Change Plan has identified more than 35 initiatives to reduce emissions, and more than 300 initiatives for the country to adapt to the effects of climate change.
The Friends of the Environment Centre is due to also organize several similar events in the month of August within its vision of raising awareness on the importance of conserving the environment and training the youth on recycling processes.
