Qatar is hosting The International Labor Conference this June 2023, and it is considered the supreme decision-making body in the International Labor Organization of the United Nations.
The annual conference includes heads of government, prominent workers, trade unions, official figures from the 187 member states worldwide, and international observers in Geneva.
The conference, whose agenda continues until Friday the 16th of this month, is a cornerstone for advancing social justice and achieving social protection for workers. This edition also focuses on a transition towards developing environmentally sustainable economies and societies.
The State of Qatar Unanimously Elected to Chair the Conference
After the start of the annual meeting, the Minister of Labor, Ali bin Samikh Al-Marri, was elected to represent the State of Qatar unanimously. He will assume the presidency of the International Labor Conference in its 111th edition this year.
This selection comes a year after Al-Marri was elected Vice-President in the work of the 110th session of the International Labor Conference last year. In appreciation of Qatar's reform efforts in labor rights, he will continue to improve labor laws, conditions, and systems in force in the country.
Notably, the State of Qatar created a law prohibiting working in open spaces between 10:00 am and 3:30 pm from June 1st to September 15th of each year. Due to this momentous decision, the State of Qatar would register with, according to the International Labor Organization, the most significant number of prohibited working hours in the Gulf region to protect workers from the heat of the sun and harsh working conditions.
