Ministry of Municipality Nears Completion on 28 Agricultural and Food Security Projects

The Agricultural Affairs Sector of the Ministry of Municipality (MoM) is implementing 28 strategic projects and initiatives to boost Qatar’s agricultural production and ensure food security. Most of the projects are nearing completion, with the rest in very advanced stages.
A project to develop a date production system in the country has achieved 99 percent completion. Meanwhile, the initiatives to raise the sustainable productivity of vegetables and to increase the area of organic farming have reached 99 percent and 83 percent, respectively.
According to the report, the National Honeybee Programme has reached 78 percent completion. As much as 90 percent of the initiative to develop a production and marketing database for agricultural activities has been reached, while the initiative to enhance the capacities of research stations and agricultural laboratories has wrapped up.
The drive to supply and install greenhouses has realized 58 percent completion, as part of an effort to distribute approximately 3,478 greenhouses to local farms. The greenhouses have been provided in an area of 666 hectares of arable land. The project to develop pastures and produce green fodders has reached 99 percent completion.
The Agricultural Affairs Sector is also contributing to implementing five major initiatives for marketing vegetables and dates.
These projects and initiatives were launched by the Ministry of Municipality under Qatar’s National Food Security Strategy 2018-2023 that aims to increase local food production and ensure food security.
Qatar is developing a new Food Security Strategy 2024-30 which will continue this progress by focusing on innovative solutions in agriculture and adopting sustainable systems. It will further focus on improving market mechanisms and the competitiveness of local products.
The International Horticultural Expo 2023, the second largest event to be hosted by the State of Qatar, is expected to especially contribute to the new Food Security Strategy 2024-30. The exhibition, the first international horticultural exhibition to be held in a desert climate, will start later this year in October and will specifically focus on using innovative technologies to address climate, water and environmental sustainability issues.
The State of Qatar's efforts in agricultural and food security have led to it occupying an advanced global and regional position on the global Food Security Index.
