Qatar is on the threshold of developing a new food security strategy for the 2024-2030 period that will focus on innovative solutions and sustainable systems to boost the country’s agricultural sector and ensure food security.

These comments were made by His Excellency Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, Minister of Municipality, during his participation in the 43rd Session of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Conference in Rome, Italy.

HE Al Subaie heads the Qatari delegation participating in the conference, and was elected Vice-Chairman of the session,  which will continue until July 7 in the Italian capital under the strategic framework of “Better Production, Better Nutrition, Better Environment and Better Life.”

He commented on his election saying, “The election of Qatar as Vice-President of the 43rd Session of FAO Conference is an indication of the international status held by the State, the confidence given by the member states and also the effective partnership that Qatar undertakes in the Organisation.”

HE further attributed the election to Qatar’s advanced rankings on the Global Food Security Index due to its efforts in raising its level of self-sufficiency by increasing local production and developing agricultural practices built on modern methods.

The Minister stated that “There will be an improvement in market mechanisms and competitiveness of local products. There will be many projects and initiatives in the field of food security in line with the development goals of Qatar and Qatar National Vision 2030.”

Speaking at the same conference, Dr Masoud Jarallah Al Marri, the Director of Food Security Department at the Ministry of Municipality, highlighted Qatar’s strategic approach towards food security and the anticipated role the International Horticultural Exhibition (Expo 2023 Doha) will play in addressing key agricultural challenges.

Al Marri pointed out that many of the technologies that will be presented at the expo will benefit Qatar in finding solutions to water shortages and other agricultural issues.

He stated that “We expect the Expo to bring a lot of technologies to Qatar and hold many events, hosting experts to discuss the challenges in the agriculture sector which is a key element in agricultural development and food security.”
