How to Spend Eid as an Expat in Qatar
Religion and Society

This week will mark the beginning of the Eid Al-Adha holiday, which is the second Islamic holiday of the year and
follows Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr by only two months.
The holiday is also a national holiday in Qatar and across the Muslim world. This year, the Amiri Diwan announced a week long holiday from work from 9 to 15 Dhu al-Hijjah/ 27 June to 3 July.
Eid Al-Adha, which translates to “Feast of the Sacrifice,” commemorates the story of the Prophet Abraham. As narrated in the Qu’ran, Abraham was commanded by God to sacrifice his son Ismail. Both Abraham and Ismail submitted to this command, but at the last moment, God intervened and ordered Abraham to sacrifice a ram instead.
To commemorate this sacrifice, Muslims who have the financial means sacrifice an animal on this holiday. The meat is then divided into three parts: one for oneself and their family, one as gifts to friends and family, and one given in charity to the needy. This ensures that all in the community are able to enjoy a special meal to mark the occasion.
The holiday also marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.
Eid celebrations are often a time to gather with family and community, and are often especially geared towards children.
Eid Prayers at Education City Stadium:
The festivities kick off with the Eid prayer, usually held quite early in the morning. The Ministry of Endowments and
Islamic Affairs has announced that the Eid prayer this year will begin at exactly five o’lock and one minute.
Whereas worshippers often conduct daily prayers inside the mosques, the Eid prayer is held in large and open public spaces.
Whether Muslim or non-Muslim, we recommend you start your Eid holiday with the Eid prayers at Education City Stadium, which hosted eight matches in last year’s FIFA World Cup.
Following a short sermon by the imam, the festivities will continue with Minaretein’s Eid Celebration until 9 AM.
The family-friendly event will offer a number of enjoyable activities, including face painting, games, and food and drinks. Education City Stadium can be conveniently reached by tram, and parking is available at the West Parking Area, Oxygen Park, and Al Shaqab parking.
Fireworks Display at Lusail Boulevard
Later on the first day of Eid, June 28, be sure to not miss the fireworks display at Al Sa’ad Plaza from 08:30 to 09:30 pm. The display promises to be a magical experience, and is free for all to enjoy.
