Prominent Academics Discuss Ethical Challenges of Artificial Intelligence at Qatar National Library

Qatar National Library (QNL), in partnership with Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), hosted its second Cultural Salon, focusing on the theme of "Artificial Intelligence: Science, Work, and Ethical Challenges." The event brought together prominent academics in computing and ethics to discuss the impact of AI on various aspects of society.

The panel, chaired by Dr. Ahmed K. Almagarmid, Executive Director of the Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) at HBKU, featured Dr. Ghanim Al Sulaiti, an AI technology expert, and Dr. Mohammed Ghaly, a Professor of Islamic Studies and Bioethics at HBKU.

Discussions centered around the challenges, opportunities, and ethical considerations posed by AI as it reshapes our world regarding work, society, and culture. Dr. Al Sulaiti highlighted the augmentation of human abilities through AI in fields such as medicine, education, and design. Dr. Ghaly delved into the ethical dimensions of AI and the complexities arising from its rapid development. AI's evolution, integration into everyday activities, and transformative potential across different industries were emphasized by Dr. Almagarmid.

The event concluded with a recognition of the need for further exploration and discussion regarding the ethical implications of AI, as it adds complexity to universally accepted principles like justice, transparency, and privacy preservation. The Cultural Salon allowed scholars and experts to engage in the ongoing discourse surrounding AI and its implications.
