The Shura Council recently affirmed the important role that parliamentarians play and their important contributions to Qatar’s national strategic plans and promoting popular participation, noting the great support and importance given by His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the country, to popular participation in decision-making.

The statement came on the occasion of the International Day of Parliamentary Action, celebrated on June 30 of each year, the anniversary of the founding of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in 1889.

This year, the occasion also coincides with the “Parliaments for the Planet” campaign launched by the Inter-Parliamentary Union earlier this year in an effort to push parliaments to make progress on other climate agreements and treaties, and to accelerate the reduction of carbon emissions.

The Shura Council expressed the importance of global cooperation and joint parliamentary action in reducing carbon emissions and preserving the planet from natural and human threats.

The Council drew attention to the efforts of the State of Qatar and its keenness to diversify energy sources away from oil and gas by switching to renewable energy, and its participation as in the "Net Zero Producers Forum," which works to support the goals of member states in the transition to clean energy. The State of Qatar is one of the founding member-states of the forum and has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 24 percent, and to source 20 percent of its energy from solar power by 2030.

The Shura Council closed the statement by affirming, in response to popular demands, its eagerness to exercise its legislative and oversight powers to coordinate with the government in  increasing the use of renewable and clean energy as alternative sources.
